The University of Maryland Human Powered Submarine team competed at the 7th International Submarine Races at Carderock, Maryland the week of June 23, 2003. Led by Dr. Marjory Erickson-Kirk, the UMd team (based on a class in Mechanical Engineering) entered two boats: Terpedo and R.S.R. Fourier. R.S.R. Fourier was the fastest overall single-person boat, at 4.916 kts, and Terpedo was the second to the overall winner in the two-person category at a speed of 3.149 kts. [The only role of the Space Systems Laboratory in this is to host the UMd sub team in development tests at the Neutral Buoyancy Research Facility... but we're proud of the accomplishments of our friends and colleagues. Go, Terps!] You can download a copy of the press release here.
